Moderators George Stephanopolous and Charlie Gibson spent the first 50 minutes obsessed with distractions that only political insiders care about--gaffes, polling numbers, the stale Rev. Wright story, and the old-news Bosnia story. And, channelling Karl Rove, they directed a video question to Barack Obama asking if he loves the American flag or not. Seriously.
You can visit their website (moveon.org) to sign a petition informing the media that you as an American citizen want to hear about the issues.
ABC has been criticized for how they handled the debate on April 16, 2008. This was the first time the two candidates had shared a debate stage in seven weeks. It came six days before a primary in Pennsylvania. This debate has been characterized as the "Gotcha" debate.
Obama has been under fire for his ties to Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Weather Underground leader William Ayers, as well as for his "elitist" remarks made about "small town" America. Also, there were questions about his patriotism pointing to the fact that he did not salute the flag earlier in the campaign and he would not agree to wearing a lapel 'flag' pin.
The moderators questioned Hillary Clinton about her "Bosnia" remark and a couple of hard tough questions were handed her way, also. Though, some people think the focus was mainly on Obama. Maybe, but we do know that the first 50 minutes of the debate were focused on political "gaffes" and nothing else.
