Dry Drowning | Boy Dies One Hour After Swimming

Sunday, June 1, 2008, Johnny Jackson went swimming for the first time. Tragically, it also would be his last. Somehow 10-year-old Johnny Jackson got some water in his lungs while playing around in the neighborhood pool in Goose Creek, SC.

Later, he walked home with his mother and sister. After his bath, Johnny told his mother he was sleepy. Less than an hour later his mother checked on him. She walked over to his bed and found his face literally covered with spongy white material. She and a family friend tried to revive him. Johnny was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of 10-year-old Johnny Jackson's sudden death was dry drowning.

According to the CDC, some 3,600 people drowned in 2005, the most recent year for which there are statistics. Some 10 to 15 percent of those deaths was classified as dry drowning, which can occur up to 24 hours after a small amount of water gets into the lungs. In children, that can happen during a bath.~msnbc
