Big Brown, the Triple Crown hopeful, lost today to Number 6 horse, out of the gate, Da'Tara. Big Brown was a huge favorite to win. His odds of winning had gone all the way up past 1/5 at some online gambling sites. But, Da'Tara wins in a shocking upset at 38/1 odds. I watched it live and I was stunned!
Instead of going the distance for the Triple Crown, becoming the first thoroughbred to do so in 30 years, Big Brown became the first Triple Crown hopeful to finish last. By race time, $5.9 million had been bet at the track on Big Brown. This number did not include the online gambling sites. Only around $168,000 had been bet on Da'Tara. The winning purse, for the Belmont Stakes winner, was worth $600,000. Nick Zito was the winning trainer. And, Alan Garcia was the winning jockey.
According to the TV sports reporters, after the race, Big Brown looked well-trained even with the quarter-crack in his hoof. Some of the reporters added that they wondered if it was a mistake to run Big Brown. Also, it was reported that the last time Big Brown ran against Da'Tara he beat him by 23 lengths. The handlers of Big Brown, namely trainer Rick Dutrow, will find out the reason why Big Brown ran so poorly.
Belmont Park had a crowd of more than 100,000. The place was "quiet" at the end of this race.
