UPDATE: Tuesday night, July 1, 2008, Mark Dean Schwab was put to death by lethal injection at Florida’s state prison in Starke, FL. Schwab had been on death row since 1992 for kidnapping, raping, and killing 11-year-old Junny Rios-Martinez of Cocoa in 1991.
Schwab was the 10th inmate nationwide and the 1st inmate in Florida to be executed since a botched lethal injection made headlines in December, 2006. Several members of Junny Rios-Martinez’s family applauded outside the prison when Schwab’s death was announced.
Child-killer Mark Dean Schwab finally should be on his way to meet his maker. He is one step closer to lethal injection. Friday, the Florida Supreme court denied Schwab's latest plea to stay his execution. The long awaited execution date is scheduled for Tuesday, July 1, 2008.
Schwab, 39, has been on death row since 1992. He was convicted of raping and killing 11-year-old Junny Rios-Martinez of Cocoa. He met Junny after seeing his picture in a local newspaper. This child molester proceeded to stalk the child. In 1991 Schwab befriended the child's family by posing as a news reporter and telling them that he wanted to write an article about the child's goal as an accomplished surfer. Schwab, a high school dropout and convict, had been released 2 months earlier after serving half of an eight year sentence for raping another boy. Schwab even had fake newspaper credentials.
On April 18, 1991, Schwab called Junny's school and identified himself as the boy's father, leaving a message for Junny to go to a baseball field after school. Later, witnesses said they saw Junny get into a U-Haul with Schwab. Five days later, Schwab led investigators to the boy's body, which he hid inside a footlocker.

Do you know if the school that allowed Junny to go meet this man was held in any way responsible for that horrible mistake? I've been trying to find that info online and can't. THanks
In reply to Dan and Donna: That's a good question. I wondered the same thing. This happened in 1991 so maybe the schools didn't have the safe guards they have in place today. The link I gave at the end of the article points to a very extensive article. You might want to contact the author of that article.
I actually live in the town & went to the school that he went to ,i am only 22 so im younger than he was but , after that happened they mandated secret code words for parents when they called about their children and only people that know the word can recieve info on their children and they have to know it to pick them up. But I dont believe they were held anyway responsible because there were no such rules or regulations at the time.

hi my name is Melissa i grew up with Junny he is my brothers and mys god brother we meet Junny when we were still in dipers. And no there were no codes then to pick your childrn up from school Junny is why they have those codes now and I for one am thankfull that my kids are atleast some what safe knowing that they need to have a password to be picked up from school.
