US Mom Pleads Not Guilty in Megan Meier Suicide Case

Megan Meier

Lori Drew, 40, of Missouri pulled a MySpace hoax in 2006 that caused 13-year-old Megan Meier to commit suicide. Meier hanged herself in October 2006 shortly after receiving a message from "Josh," her online boyfriend, saying among other things that he no longer had interest in a a romantic relationship with her and the world would be better off without her.

Lori Drew is facing charges of conspiracy to inflict emotional distress and accessing MySpace accounts without authorization. Prosecutors say Drew set up a fake account on MySpace and posed, along with others, as a 16-year-old boy "Josh Evans" to target Megan Meier who was a classmate of her teenage daughter.

Each of the four criminal counts in her indictment carries a maximum prison term of 5 years.
