May 31 MMA EliteXC | Kimbo Slice | Cauliflower Ear James Thompson

Last night was the first free televised MMA EliteXC event put on by CBS. Held at The Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, Kimbo Slice vs James Thompson was the main fight card.

The 5 matchups were:

• Kimbo Slice vs. James "The Colossus" Thompson (Heavyweights)


• "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler vs. Scott "Hands of Steel" Smith (for EliteXC Middleweight title)


• Gina "Conviction" Carano vs. Kaitlin Young (140 lb. weight class)


• Phil Baroni vs. Murilo "Ninja" Rua (Middleweights)


• Brett "The Grim" Rogers vs. Jon Murphy (Heavyweights)

From the street to EliteXC, Kimbo Slice's unorthodox rise through the world of mixed martial arts started with posting his local fights on YouTube, a move that quickly received millions of views and made him an instant legend among fans of the sport.

Kimbo Slice, 33, aka Kevin Ferguson (6'2" - 240 pounds) who resides in Perrine, FL, was matched against James "The Colossus" Thompson, 29 (6'5" - 265 pounds) with a 14-9 record, a British MMA standout. He is the first MMA fighter with a height advantage over Kimbo Slice.

James "The Colossus" Thompson entered the fight last night without much of a welcome, but left as a gallant warrior with a better than expected chin. The Englishman came to fight and showed every weakness of Kimbo's arsenal especially avoiding the take down. If you look at the video below, you'll see that Kimbo Slice found himself on the ground several times.

In the end Kimbo came out the victor. Within seconds of the third round Kimbo Slice found the mark for his punches including a right hand that bust open Thompson’s cauliflower ear. Blood immediately flowed and suddenly Slice had an obvious target. But, through it all, Thompson was still standing and moving on his feet. Kimbo was declared the winner but looked like the loser at the end, obviously exhausted. After the fight even Kimbo said he has a lot to learn when it comes to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Let's hope Kimbo Slice will show some real MMA skills on his next fight.
