Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff arrives in Louisiana on Sunday. He will observe preparations for Hurricane Gustav, which could make landfall along the Gulf Coast as early as 9 am Monday morning. It was announced a few minutes ago that the storm might arrive sooner than earlier predicted. The new arrival time would be between 9 am to 2 pm Monday.
This killer Hurricane Gustav headed toward the US Gulf Coast Sunday where residents jammed highways on mandatory orders to evacuate New Orleans. Gustav was pronounced a Category 3 hurricane when it battered Cuba Sunday after claiming at least 81 lives in the the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Jamaica.
Mayor Nagin of New Orleans has called hurricane Gustav "The Storm of the Century." So far, the forecast is that this will be a Category 4 hurricane, sustained winds of 131 to 155 mph. It could turn into the highest level, Category 5, sustained winds greater than 155 mph. Nagin has ordered a curfew starting tonight from "dusk to dawn." Ray Nagin has ordered mandatory evacuations and told residents that if they did not evacuate they are on their own. Relief will not be provided for those who did not heed the warning. Anyone caught out in the street past the curfew will be arrested.
