Breaking: Charlie Gibson Retires | Diane Sawyer Steps In | ABC

Photo: WENN

It seems a little early to retire as news anchor of 'ABC's World News' but Charlie Gibson announced today that he is retiring and the network revealed that Gibson will be passing the torch to 'Good Morning America' host, Diane Sawyer, in January, 2010. I guess he wanted to start fresh with his new life, in the second decade of the 21st century, after almost 35 years with ABC.

Gibson has been the evening news anchor since May 2006. This is part of what he wrote in an e-mail to the "World News" staff:
This has been my professional home for almost 35 years. And I love this news department, and all who work in it, to the depths of my soul.
Well... I wish him the best in his years of retirement. I'm sure he could use some well deserved "R & R." And congratulations go out to Diane Sawyer in her upcoming new position. I just wonder who will replace her at "Good Morning America?"
