Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger has been named the "New American Hero" for saving everyone on board yesterday on the plane he piloted for US Airways. It was flight #1549 out of LaGuardia airport bound for Charlotte, NC. Sullenberger, 57, is an experienced pilot with 40 years of flying airplanes and 29 years with US Airways. He has been praised nationally and internationally for his expert handling of a crippled jetliner. The pilot landed his jet on the Hudson River without any loss of life and no life-threatening injuries.
According to some reports, Captain Sullenberger reported a 'double-bird strike,' and witnesses said they heard the plane's engine 'explode.' The airbus 320 took off at 3:26 pm on Thursday and went down minutes later. While the pilot guided the plane toward safety he made an announcement to the passengers with these words:
Brace for Impact.
The plane crashed in the Hudson River and first response units were there to rescue the passengers within 5 minutes. Captain Sullenberger made 2 trips through the cabin to make sure no one was left behind.
Now... that's a trait of a true hero.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) begins its investigation into the plane's NYC landing. A giant crane and a barge were brought in today to help pull the jetliner from the Hudson River.
US Airways CEO, Doug Parker, said that it was premature to speculate about the cause of the crash. After the NTSB completes its investigation the cause of the plane crash will be reported.
Meanwhile, check out some great video coverage, below. Just about anything you can think of, most likely, will be located on one of these video clips. There's even video coverage of the Hero Pilot's wife speaking. US Airways is asking the Hero Pilot's family not to talk, but his wife wanted to speak out for the first time about how proud they are. All the video clips are very interesting and informative:
